A days ago sony released the updrade to android 4.0 (AKA Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) to their Xperia smartphones. And apparently the released of this upgrade has become kind of a nightmire for Sony.
I say a nightmare because foremost the Xperia mobile owners have been waiting the release of this update for months. And now that they finally have got their release this ICS release has come with the surprise that have been causing a malfunction in the wifi. According to slashdot the solution that Sony has gave until now is just to reboot.
So this move Sony did I believe gives us some subjects to talk about. First is the economic impact this gives to Sony in the mobile market, since they already are not well positioned (like samsung is for example). And the other is the indirect impact it has on google, since google right now depends directly on their hardware manufactures in order to keep their business going.
So about the fist one I would say that this is a move that has come in a very very bad timing for Sony, since right now the cell phones that are stealing most of the market share are iphones, Samsungs and HTCs, and Sony ericsson really has got to compete to enter into this market right now if don’t want to fall back behind. All of this and we have not even considered the future arrive of the windows 8 phones later end of this year to complete the picture. So from now on Sony really will have to step up in order to get a piece of the market share since this time they have it more hard comparing to years ago when they easily gained clients just by selling phones focused on multimedia stuff or camera oriented.
About the second stuff, the indirect impact it has on google, well it really only has a negative impact if the actual Xperia smartphone users change to an iPhone which is the only actual android competition. But other than that if the Xperia users get to change to a Samsung galaxy or something like that they will still stay on the android platform. So summarizing the ones that really get to loose in this deal are the ones that made the mistake of not making an extensive testing, that is to say Sony.
